Natural Remedies for Depression

Yoga for depression

5. Yoga

A study published in 2007 in the “Oxford Journals” found yoga to be a “promising intervention for depression.” It is really about calming the mind through a combination of breathing and physical poses. Not all yoga is the same, so try out different styles to find which one is the right fit for you. The names of the various asanas or poses are in themselves indications of the purpose they are supposed to fulfill: warrior pose for confidence and strength, wind-releasing pose for stomach problems and so on. Practicing for 20 minutes a day, or at least three times a week, will give you the maximum benefits.

6. Let the sun warm your skin

Expose yourself to sunlight can boost mood, it has been shown to be effective for seasonal mood changes that happen in the darker winter months. A theory is that brain chemicals that transmit information between nerves, called neurotransmitters (for example, serotonin), may be altered in individuals with seasonal depression. It is believed that exposure to light can correct these imbalances. In addition, researchers are now discovering that vitamin D may play an important role in mental health and in depression. We get some of it from food, but most comes from sunlight. Learn more about vitamin D.

7. Exercise

Regular exercise is one of the most effective and inexpensive ways to improve mood and is something that can be integrated into a treatment plan. In Europe, doctors prescribe exercise for their depression patients. Exercise temporarily boosts feel-good chemicals called endorphins, which act like natural anti-depressants. Just brisk walking 35 minutes a day, five times a week — can lift mood, reduce stress and boost self-esteem as well as protect against heart disease, high blood pressure and cancer.

Note:

It’s important to remember that these strategies are not necessarily a substitute for medication. As with any form of treatment, talk to your doctor about your symptoms and the natural remedies you’re considering before you try them out for yourself.
