The prostate is a small gland found in men, near their bladders. A healthy human prostate is classically said to be slightly larger than a walnut. The mean weight of the “normal” prostate in adult males is about 11 grams, usually ranging between 7 and 16 grams. A healthy prostate plays a key role in maintaining quality of life and overall health. As men age, they are prone to develop prostate problems such as enlargement, inflammation and even cancer. There are several things you can do to improve your prostate health:
1. Watch your diet.
Include more soy in your diet from sources such as tofu, soy nuts or soy flour or powders. The properties of soy, which is found in many vegetarian dishes, fight cancer. Eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables every day, such as tomatoes, watermelons, pink grapefruits, guava and papaya contain lycopene, a powerful antioxidant. Fish contain high levels of omega-3 acids, including salmon and tuna. These foods will help your prostate as well as your heart and immune system. In addition, according to the scientific researches, green tea can significantly slow the process of prostate cancer. Recommended types of teas for prostate problems are: milkweed, cranberry, bear grapes, nettle and green tea. The most important dietary principles for prostate health are to eat a low-fat, well-balanced and varied diet.
2. Saw Palmetto for prostate health.
Saw palmetto, also known as the sable plant, is a member of the fan palm family. The plant produces maroon-black berries which are the size and shape of an olive. These berries are the medicinal part of the plant. Saw palmetto extract is the most popular herbal treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia. You can take saw palmetto supplements to treat a variety of prostate disorders.
3. See your doctor regularly.
Have your prostate examined every year. Let your doctor know if you have a family history of prostate cancer. Having a father or brother with prostate cancer more than doubles a man’s risk of developing this disease. Talk to your doctor about any symptoms you have experienced, including incontinence, impotence or if you have noticed an enlarged prostate.
4. Regular exercise
It is recommended that you exercise for at least 30 minutes every day. Yoga or similar exercises which involve the hip and sacral area of the body, will assist by increasing the circulation of blood and energy to the pelvic area. If you are overweight, get yourself on a diet and exercise plan that will get you in a healthy range. Maintaining a healthy weight will keep your prostate healthy.
